OSLC Interest Group Spotlight- Discussions on White Privilege and Anti-racism

Hey OSLC folks-

This is an update for those who could not join us at our first discussion.  The same link should work every time though going forward unless we get too many people or another part of the group wants another night, etc. I think all would agree that we had a good first meeting, with 4 people from the church, one from my work and one from my other community organizing group.  We were still just

talking about some basics, like guidelines for a healthy group debate (see below) and talking about our individual backgrounds, as well as deciding our next step, which is to read one of the classics in this work before next Wed if possible…White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh…which can be found here and other places: http://www.antiracistalliance.com/Unpacking.html

Discussed guidelines:
Give everyone benefit of the doubt; listen without judgment; be respectful; allow ourselves to be vulnerable; taking risks in expressing oneself; “What is learned here… leaves here, while what is shared here… stays here”; start and stop on time – with main activity  (though there can be relaxed time after that); Don’t ask people who identify in the marginalized group to define/defend their community; try
not to take things personally & if you do, do some individual work as to why that is… i.e. rebuilding the common ground with “I statements” etc.

Though the group discussion starts at 5:30 on Wednesday, the room will be open at 5:15 for friendly conversation prior to the start of the formal meeting. Thanks, and I look forward to seeing more of you this Wednesday!

– Keith

Care of Creation

In this old Gaelic Christian poem, the sun is the eye of God.

The eye of the great God,
The eye of the God of glory,
The eye of the King of hosts,
The eye of the King of the living.

Pouring upon us
At each time and season,
Pouring upon us gently and generously.

Glory to thee
Thou glorious Sun.
Glory to thee, thou Son,
Face of the God of Life.

Quoted in Anam Cara, by John O’Donohue

Prayer Requests:

We mentioned various prayer requests within small groups on Sunday. As a collective and not being specific, we lift up that everyone stays well and smart during these unprecedented times, we pray for all small businesses and restaurants affected by Covid, we lift up marriages and health factors that are in question, we lift up the caregivers as they care for others, we lift up the first responders as well as the well being of the human race, we pray that we are given the right words and heart when we are faced with those who do not see eye to eye with us,  we pray that we are willing to have those tough conversations that are so important to bridge the gaps of difference, we pray for those struggling against white privilege as an individual as well as group, and we pray that though we are undergoing hard times, that we all can rediscover joy under restriction.

Highlights from Council and Staff

  • The church council meeting minutes for Tuesday, June 2, 2020.
    • Steve with Mindful Business Solutions spoke about ongoing activity with updating our bookkeeping, through upgrades to Quickbooks software, and about current challenges and needs for our accounting. Caleb and Violet each gave personnel reports that expressed that they were working right up to their 20 hours per week, and shared what support they needed and what their current and future projects are. Caleb is working to produce music and looking for musical collaborations and Violet is documenting current procedures and moving to start analysis on social media use and outreach. Pastor Marty shared the need for both funeral services for various members as well as an upcoming baptism, and discussed how to meet these needs.
    • Various parking spaces have been rented to different groups, and the church roof is currently being fixed, with a small delay into next week for some unforeseen material needs, but the roof should be completed soon. Some initial ideas outlining the specific steps and needs for opening the church have been put together and are being discussed as a concept with no dates currently targeted. There will be another Q&A session for the congregation with Dan and Kristin in July, as this past session was successful.
    • The planning of small group ministries is being discussed, with the council currently needing to create member lists for the groups. Discussion around support for groups, meeting times, and how to keep groups self-perpetuating. Please keep an eye out for an email later this week.
  • You may have received news from the council that Erica H has stepped down from OSLC Choir Director. Please see A Letter From Council for more details.
  • OSLC Staff will be transitioning to different email addresses from our personal emails.

Community Partnership Spotlight

In times of trouble and divide we find unity in our faith and with others who are faithful. Thank you Mary Fulton for sharing this beautiful unified blessing from various churches in Philadelphia with us:

Care of Creation

Another name for human solidarity is love, and when I think about our world in its present form, that is what overwhelms me. The human love that works to feed the hungry and clothe the naked, the love that comes together in defense of sea turtles and sea ice and of all else around us that is good. The love that lets each of us see we’re not the most important thing on earth, and makes us okay with that. . . .     Bill McKibben, founder 350.org

Action: We know that all the issues we have been facing already are made more challenging with the climate crisis. Issues of racism have become blatant and obvious. There are matters of systemic change that need addressing to show the love we have for humanity along with our environmental concerns. Watch for two Colorado initiatives coming from public discourse to help create better equalization and fairness in our communities: Paid Family Leave and Fair Tax. Further details forthcoming as we get closer to November and the ballot box.

Community Partnership Spotlight

Colorado Faith Communities

We are apart of the Colorado Faith Communities United against Gun Violence. This is a group Pastor Tina (now deceased) got OSLC involved in long ago.  Their primary function is to help end the deaths and injuries in Colorado caused by the improper use of firearms.  The Wear Orange weekend is a national event…Orange is the color that Hadiya Pendleton’s friends wore in her honor when she was shot and killed in Chicago at the age of 15 — just one week after performing at President Obama’s 2nd inaugural parade in 2013.

Please wear the color Orange this weekend, June 5th through 7th. Please do not remain silent and try to start the conversation on why you are wearing orange.

“The ultimate tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the silence over that by the good people.” -Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

From the Desk of Pastor Marty

Hey All,

Blessed Monday to all of you!  I know this weekend was a tough time for many, and we are called to be in prayer for healing and in action for justice.  I was so thankful for the powerful conversations that we had yesterday surrounding racism and white privilege.  What was the most powerful element of that conversation was the support we got as a group and privately in many emails thanking us for the conversation, and supporting us to go further down this path together!  As those who share the call to be authentic church in our time, we exist for the sake of the world.  Words, confession, forgiveness, listening, changing, these are part of how God is going to be changing hearts to come together.  May God bless us to be a leader in hosting and facilitating this discussion.

Please make sure to prepare for Worship this Sunday.  We WILL BE HAVING COMMUNION ONLINE TOGETHER, so make sure to get your elements of bread and wine together ahead of time.  Afterwards we will be gathering in a very special coffee hour, where we will go through a implementation of our small group strategy.  We have a basic plan that we will follow, and then we will begin shaping the process over the next few weeks as we endeavor to be shaped as a church in some new ways.  I am amazed how God has led us to be engaging this work as we enter the summer of 2020.

May the Spirit of Pentecost continue to blow around among us, and may we have the faithful eyes to see its work happening in unexpected ways.  Times are changing, and we are able to be part of the solution, or a continuation of the problems in our midst.  I am proud and thankful to be serving a church that is willing to be led by the Spirit in new ways.  Yesterday’s conversation and subsequent emails help me see that all the work we’ve done up until this point is to prepare us for this moment.  May God heal, bless, and support us as we follow the call together.

Finally, I mentioned that we would put a couple of sources to get the books and get some other resources together for this conversation.  We are called to read, learn, and be able to have educated conversations during this time and this includes everyone.  I am highlighting the work of Rev. Lenny Duncan (ELCA), and Ibram X. Kendi as we begin.   The links to purchase the books are below, and some links to free” podcasts are included as well.  Blessing on learning and listening from this initial sources.

May the Peace of God be realized on earth, and may we be a part of Christ’s body that helps that happen.

Care of Creation

Surely the earth is breathing a sigh of relief for our reduction in pollution and fossil fuel use. This “Great Pause,” as some are calling it, gives me hope that we will soon find it within ourselves to protect our shared home, not only for our own sake, but for our neighbors across the globe, and future generations.
