Highlights and Updates from Council
- Building Closure. With the health and well-being of our church community as our top priority, the council voted unanimously to keep the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church building closed until Aug. 17. Some of the information that guided this decision included:
- This video interview with Dr. Michael Osterholm from the Minneapolis Area Synod, who is very pedigreed and is also a Lutheran. It is worth 40 minutes of your time (yikes!, if you have it)
- Bishop Gonia’s recommendations and resources
- We encourage you to review this information and other reports. While we mourn the loss of meeting in person, we are excited about the new opportunities for ministry that we are encountering during this unusual time. We are the church, and while our building is closed, our church is still 100% open.
- Small Group Ministry. The bulk of the meeting was spent in conversation about small groups. We discussed various models and how we might implement them. We look forward to introducing a plan for small group ministry to you in the near future.
- Roof Repair. Our roof repair will begin today (Tuesday, May 26). We expect the repairs to be complete within a week.
- Finance Transition. The transition of our financial books to Mindful Solutions is almost complete. We look forward to receiving our first reports from them in the coming weeks. Many thanks to Margaret and Selena for their work on this – both on the transition and on the church’s finances before the transition.
- Council Co-President Happy Hour Q&A Monday, June 1 at 6:00pm via Zoom. Bring your favorite beverage and your questions, and log-on for a conversation with council co-presidents: Dan Baack and Kristin Stork. We’re happy to answer any questions you have about the church and the work the council is doing at this time. Bonus points (and maybe prizes) for the most creative questions. And $10 from Kristin to anyone who asks their question in rhyme or $10 from Dan if you ask using a haiku.

Care of Creation
What are we to do as citizens of the only country in which the science of climate change is so adamantly denied by our political leadership? Two months after the US announced in June 2017 that it would withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord, 2,200 leaders from City Halls and State Houses across the US representing more than 127 million Americans signed the “We Are Still In” declaration committing to delivering on the promise of the Paris Agreement. We have agency as a collective together. This was Moses’ point in Deuteronomy 29-30. God set before the people the choice of life or death. By choosing life, not only would they live, but so would their descendants. Moses emphasizes in Deuteronomy 29: 22, 29 that what they choose impacts future generations. Quoted from Climate Church, Climate World by Jim Antal
Action: What does the ELCA teach about the nature and function of government in relation to God’s purposes? What is a faithful Lutheran response regarding citizenship and civic engagement? To help guide our church on these questions, the 2019 Churchwide Assembly asked for the preparation of a social message. At this time, the message is in draft form. Through May 27, you are invited to provide feedback on how to strengthen the message.
You are invited to read “A Draft Social Message on Government and Civic Engagement: Discipleship in a Democracy.” To offer feedback, please fill out the survey. You may also choose to email comments to draftsocialmessage@elca.org. The comment period ends May 27. To learn more about this social message and the process of its creation, please visit https://elca.org/Faith/Faith-and-Society/Social-Messages/Government.
